How to Teach your Child

“Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not
depart from it.” NKJV

Proverbs 22:6

What is the best way to teach my child?

Model a Love for God’s Word:

Read the Bible yourself: Your child will be more likely to engage with the Bible if
they see you consistently reading and valuing it. Let them see your enthusiasm
and how it impacts your life.

Talk about it: Don’t just read it silently. Share what you’re learning, how a verse
encourages you, or how God has spoken to you through His Word.
Integrate it into daily life: Refer to biblical principles when discussing everyday
situations, moral dilemmas, or even when you’re just chatting.

Make it Age-Appropriate and Engaging:

Children’s Bibles: For younger children, start with age-appropriate Bibles that
have colorful illustrations and simplified language. Story Bibles are excellent for
introducing them to key narratives.

Bible stories: Read Bible stories in an engaging way. Use dierent voices, act
them out, or use puppets to bring the characters to life.

Songs and memorization: Many children learn well through music. Teach them
Bible songs and help them memorize key verses. Make it fun and interactive.

Visual aids: Use visual reminders like post-it notes with verses on mirrors or
chalkboards with scriptures in common areas of your home.
Interactive activities: Look for Bible apps for kids, online reading plans, or
creative crafts that relate to Bible stories.

Create a Consistent Routine:

Family devotions: Set aside a regular time for family devotions, whether it’s at
mealtimes, before bed, or in the morning. Even a few minutes of reading and
discussion can make a big dierence.

Bedtime stories: Reading a Bible story before bed can be a comforting and
meaningful routine.

Incorporate it naturally: Look for opportunities throughout the day to bring up
biblical themes and principles, rather than making it feel like a forced lesson.

Focus on Understanding and Application:

Discuss meaning: Don’t just read the words; discuss what they mean. Ask
questions that encourage your child to think about the message and how it
applies to their own life.

Explain God’s character: Help them understand who God is – His love,
forgiveness, power, and faithfulness – through the stories and teachings of the
Bible.

Show blessings of obedience: Teach them about the positive outcomes of
obeying God’s commandments and the wisdom found in His Word.

Encourage curiosity: Spark their curiosity by asking thought-provoking questions
and allowing them to explore and discover truths for themselves.

Emphasize Obedience and God’s Love:

Focus on Jesus: Introduce them to Jesus and His incredible love for them, as the
core message of the Gospel.

Obedience: You must show and teach your child the importance of obeying the
bible. As a child of God we must do exactly as He tells us. Begin to teach them
about living holy.

Pray together: Pray with your child regularly, thanking God for His Word and
asking for understanding. Pray for God to reveal Himself to your child.

Leverage Church and Community:

Children’s ministry: Encourage your child’s participation in age-appropriate
church programs like children’s church or children church field trips. Ask them
what they learned and show interest.

Christian community: Surround your family with a supportive Christian
community where your child can see faith lived out by others.

Remember, consistency is the key! Teaching your child about the Word of
God is a process, not a one-time event. Be patient, consistent, and
prayerful, and trust that God will work in their hearts as you faithfully
sow the seeds of His truth.
